Beginning Plan:

The photos of Finland will be projected on some natural materials such as wood, water, ice, while the photos of Hong Kong will be print on transparent plastic paper and exhibited it layer by layer according to its composition. They will be placed on 2 separated walls which they are facing each other.

Problems:

  • By trying to project a photo on ice, I found that the photo became very blurry that hardly show the detail. The blurry effect takes over the photo itself that seem can not conduct my idea smoothly.

  • A big piece of ice is heavy, it is hard to hang on the wall.

  • The melting effect of ice helps to stress my idea on environmental issue (the relationship between time and the artwork) , but it is difficult to be executed, I have to consider the exit for melting ice water to avoid the destroy of the setup and the venue.

By try and error, instead of using real ice,I decided to use acrylic plastic and resin to make the water-ice effect.

Example on the internet:

These are the effects I want to achieve. Due to the limitation on equipment, I can not use glass to make it, but I can use acrylic plastic to make a similar effect.

Modification

The photographs are merged on a wood board individually and hang on the wooden stand by rope. A big white fabric is hanged behind the photos. To express the idea of depressed and tripped feeling, I put a twisted acrylic board on the top on a picture to create an underwater effect. It also a response to an environmental issue – the rise of sea level due to global warming.

Use of materials

Concrete:

As a sign board of the tittle

Testing

  • Try different ration of concrete powder and water

  • Try to mix white concrete and grey concrete with different portion

  • Try to add different color powder into concrete

Conclusion:

  • White concrete is fragile and hard to condense together

  • Grey concrete is strong and good at construction

  • lighter color can be achieved when more water is added, but it takes more time to dry.

  • darker color can be achieved when less water is added, it takes less time to dry.

  • Concrete becomes more fragile when more white concrete are mixed with grey one.
